DIY Terrace Flooring: A Simple Guide to Laying Concrete Slabs

Essential Preparation: Ensuring a Sturdy Foundation

Step 1: Define the Area

Begin by outlining the precise area where you intend to lay the concrete slabs. Use stakes and string to clearly mark the boundaries.

Step 2: Excavation and Leveling

Dig out the marked area to a depth of approximately 15 centimeters. Ensure the excavated area is level using a spirit level and a straight edge.

Step 3: Base Layer

Create a stable base layer by spreading a 10-centimeter layer of coarse gravel over the leveled area. Compact the gravel firmly using a tamper or a plate compactor.

Laying the Concrete Slabs

Step 1: Prepare the Mortar

Mix cement and sand in a ratio of 1:3 to create a mortar mixture. Add water gradually to achieve a consistency that is easy to spread.

Step 2: Lay the Slabs

Spread a thin layer of mortar over the base layer. Position the concrete slabs onto the mortar, pressing down gently to ensure they are level. Use a rubber mallet to tap the slabs into place if necessary.

Step 3: Joint Filler

Once the slabs are laid, fill the joints between them with a mixture of sand and cement. Brush the mixture into the joints and compact it using a jointing tool.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Allow the mortar to set for at least 24 hours before walking on the terrace. Once set, water the surface regularly for the next week to promote curing.

Additional Tips for Success

  • Use high-quality concrete slabs for durability and longevity.
  • Consider the size and thickness of the slabs to ensure they are suitable for the intended use.
  • Protect the terrace from moisture with a sealant or sealer.
  • Regularly inspect and clean the terrace to maintain its appearance and stability.
