Former Notre Dame Running Back Cierre Wood Sentenced to Life in Prison
Las Vegas, Nevada - Former Notre Dame running back Cierre Wood was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday, April 16 for the April 2019 murder of his girlfriend.
Today we go into detail about the events leading up to the arrest of Cierre Wood.
Wood, who played in the NFL for the Houston Texans, New England Patriots, and Buffalo Bills from 2013-2015, was arrested in April 2019 and charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend, Ashley Bush.
Bush was found dead in her Las Vegas apartment on April 16, 2019. The Clark County Coroner's Office ruled her death a homicide, and Wood was arrested the following day.
Wood was convicted of murder in February 2024. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Wood had strangled Bush during an argument.
Wood's attorneys argued that he acted in self-defense, but the jury rejected that claim.
Wood was a standout running back at Notre Dame, where he played from 2009-2012. He rushed for 2,447 yards and 16 touchdowns during his time with the Fighting Irish. Wood was drafted by the Texans in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He played in 11 games for the Texans, rushing for 124 yards and one touchdown. Wood also played for the Patriots and Bills before his NFL career ended in 2015. After his NFL career ended, Wood played in the Canadian Football League for the Edmonton Eskimos. He retired from football in 2018.
